Vodin, Pyrford Common near Woking, Surrey

Date: 1902

Client: Frederick Walters

Listing: Grade II*

Now called Little Court.

The entry in Pevsner's Surrey (with Charles O'Brien, Ian Nairn and Bridget Cherry, 2022) reads:

On the NW edge of Pyrford Common, Voysey built a house called VODIN (No 173 Old Woking Road) for Frederick Walters (the builders were F. Muntzer & Son). Dated 1902 with stable buildings of 1904, forming a courtyard which, although quite informal, is crisp and positive because of Voysey’s architectural integrity and respect for mass and solidity. That none of his imitators had this can be seen well enough from the other houses around. The house itself is a single long block with a steep roof (tile instead of Voysey’s favourite slates), the entrance door in an arched recess balanced by a projecting stair-tower with gable, this and the corners with sloping buttresses, the garden side without any accent.
