Applications are now invited for the Society's 14th Annual Lecture at Cowcross Street in London on Friday 7th November 2025, starting at 6pm. Non-members are welcome. We regret that we shall not be able to record this lecture.
Our speaker will be Prof. Neil Jackson. The title of his talk is C.F.A. Voysey and F.W. Troup: two lives in parallel.
Charles Francis Annesley Voysey and Francis William Troup shared more than a name. Born just two years apart, they died within two months of each other. Both were the sons of clergymen; both were, in successive years, Master of the Art Workers’ Guild; and both were architects and designers of no mean skill. In this lecture our speaker will explore their similarities and differences, the role that patronage played in their lives and the reasons why one is well remembered today – even to the extent of having a society named after him – while the other is more or less forgotten. Yet, when there is news of a change in the Bank Rate, it is he who might come to mind.
Neil Jackson is an architect and architectural historian and Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the University of Liverpool. Amongst his many publications is F.W. Troup, architect, 1859-1941 (The Building Centre Trust, 1985). In 1983 he was awarded the Hawksmoor Essay Medal of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain for his work on Troup.
Attendance will be free of charge to members and non-members alike, including a glass of wine or soft drink and nibbles. We would still like you to book, please, for planning purposes.
The event will take place in The Gallery at 77 Cowcross Street, Clerkenwell, in the London Borough of Islington.
Please do not arrive before 6pm. Our speaker's talk will start at about 7pm. The event will finish by 9pm.
The Gallery was created from the basement of a Victorian warehouse which was originally owned by Thomas Cook & Sons and is now the home of Alan Baxter & Associates LLP.
The postcode is EC1M 6EL. The nearest London Underground station is Farringdon (on the Elizabeth, Circle, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City lines). Farringdon is also a station on the National Rail network.
At the street entrance to The Gallery, pass under the arch and walk to the end of the courtyard, passing the glass-fronted reception of Alan Baxter & Associates. At the far end of the courtyard, turn right down the steps.
Please complete our online application form.
