Annual lecture, 2024

Applications are now invited for the Society's 13th Annual Lecture at Cowcross Street in London on Friday 1st November 2024, starting at 6pm. Non-members are welcome. We are also hoping to make a recording of the lecture available to members after the event.

Our speaker will be Clive Aslet. The title of his talk is Voysey and Lutyens: unlikely friends.

Clive will be looking into the creative arc of the early 20th century and exploring the work of two pre-eminent architects of that age – Voysey and Lutyens. Born twelve years apart, they shared a highly productive career in the British Arts & Crafts movement. But how often did their paths actually cross, and were they friends or competitors? How did their output and reputation stand up to the scrutiny of their fellows in the UK and on the continent? These and other questions will be investigated.

Clive Aslet is a writer, publisher and visiting Professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge. He is a Trustee and a former Chair of The Lutyens Trust. His most recent book is Sir Edwin Lutyens: Britain’s greatest architect? (Triglyph, 2023). Previous titles include The story of the country house (Yale UP, 2021) and, with the photographer Dylan Thomas, Old homes, new life: the resurgence of the British country house (Triglyph, 2019). He joined Country Life magazine in 1977 as architectural writer, becoming architectural editor in 1984, deputy editor in 1989, and editor-in-chief in 1993. In 2006, he retired from that post and took on a newly created role of editor-at-large.

Attendance will be free of charge to members and non-members alike, including a glass of wine or soft drink and nibbles. We would still like you to book, please, for planning purposes.
