Visit to Voysey House and Bedford Park

Applications are now invited for our outing to Sanderson's offices in Voysey House and Bedford Park in London on Tuesday 30th June 2026.

Introduction

During this event we shall be visiting Voysey House in Chiswick and the headquarters of the Victorian Society in Bedford Park.

What is now known as Voysey House was designed by C.F.A. Voysey in 1902 as an extension to Sanderson's wallpaper factory opposite. It was his only factory and one of very few non-domestic buildings. After several changes of occupant, in 2024 it was sensitively renovated by dMFK Architects for Dorrington PLC and then taken over once again by Sanderson's. The project was praised by Historic England. The building is listed Grade II*.

The Victorian Society occupies no.1 Priory Gardens. This house was part of the original pioneering Bedford Park development, latterly restored by the Society and serving as its headquarters since the 1970s. Designed by E.J. May in 1889 in Queen Anne style, it comprises three storeys in red and yellow brick with a Dutch gable and oriel windows. May was commended by Richard Norman Shaw as Estate Architect at Bedford Park in 1880 and held that post until 1885.

Our guide for the day will be John Scott BA (Hons), Dipl Arch, RIBA, AABC, who is a consultant conservation architect and Chair of the Victorian Society's Southern Buildings Committee, which formulates the Society’s view on listed building consent applications in the south of the UK.

Programme

All times following the start are approximate.

  • 11.30: Convene at the Sanderson Design Group offices in Voysey House. Divide into two groups, each of maximum 15. One will tour the building, while the other is shown round the archives, then swap over.
  • 13.00: Leave Voysey House, and walk (10-15 minutes) to 3 Priory Gardens, Bedford Park, headquarters of the Victorian Society, for a tour of building, light lunch and an introduction by John Scott to the Bedford Park tour, which he will then lead. This should start at about 14.15, and will last until about 16.15, although anyone wanting to leave earlier will be able to do so. Unfortunately we shall not be able to see the inside of Voysey's house 14 South Parade on this tour, although we shall be able to see the exterior.

Because there will be periods of standing out of doors, please wear suitable clothing, and waterproof if rain is forecast.
