Launch of new book
An opportunity is offered for a limited number of members to attend the launch of a new book by our member David Cole on Thursday 2nd September at The Art Workers' Guild in Queen Square, London.
The book
David's new book is entitled Great houses of the Arts and Crafts movement: one hundred masterworks, 1860-1914.
This is the first attempt to compile such a large collection of great Arts & Crafts houses into one volume, featuring work by forty of the movement’s renowned architects, including Voysey, Webb, Shaw, Prior, Lethaby, Wood, Gimson, Barnsley, Ashbee, Baillie Scott, Lorimer, Lutyens, Mackintosh, Parker & Unwin, Smith & Brewer, and others. It covers big houses such as Rodmarton Manor and Marsh Court and smaller properties such as Little Coppice and Stowford and Magnolia Cottages. This large-format volume includes 900 full-colour images. A short chapter is dedicated to each house, with photography of the exteriors and interiors, most of which have never been published, and floor plans showing the architects’ original ideas. David has researched each house and provides insightful design analysis and description along with explanatory text and footnotes.
David's previous titles are The art and architecture of C.F.A. Voysey : English pioneer modernist architect and designer (2015) and Sir Edwin Lutyens: the Arts & Crafts houses (2017).
Programme
The event will take place from 18.30 to 20.00 on Thursday 2nd September and will include a talk by David, drinks and nibbles, and the opportunity to buy a copy of the book (it is hoped at a reduced price).
Charges
The charge will be £20 per head. This is a joint event with the Lutyens Trust; the number of places for Voysey Society members will be limited initially to 20, although more may become available in due course.

The nearest Underground stations are Holborn (on the Central and Piccadilly lines) and Russell Square (on the Piccadilly line).
- From Holborn, turn right out of the station along Southampton Row, then right down Cosmo Place into Queen Square. Turn left and the Art Workers’ Guild is a few doors down on the left.
- From Russell Square, turn left out of the station, then left down Herbrand Street and left down Guilford Street. Take the first right down the short passage just after the entrance to the car park, and then right around Queen Square. The Art Workers’ Guild is on the right.
Parking is available in Queen Square, payable by meter until 18.30, free in the evening.
